Ixtapantongo Hydroelectric Power Station is a 106 MW hydroelectric facility located in Mexico, operated by Comisión Federal de Electricidad. Commissioned in 1938, it utilizes water flow to produce electricity for the national grid.

Ixtapantongo ranks as the 44th largest hydro plant in Mexico. With 106 MW, it represents 0.33% of Mexico’s total hydro capacity of 31,832 MW. Mexico has 134 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 31,832 MW. Compared to the largest hydro plant in Mexico, Chicoasén Dam at 2,400 MW, Ixtapantongo is approximately 4.4% the size.

Hydropower is an essential part of Mexico’s energy mix, contributing to the country’s renewable energy goals. The diverse geography, including rivers and mountainous areas, supports hydroelectric generation. The plant is located around 200 km west of Mexico City in the state of Michoacán.
