Castro Alves — 131 MW Hydroelectric

Castro Alves is a 130.845 MW hydroelectric power plant located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, commissioned in 2008. The facility generates electricity from hydro resources, contributing to Brazil’s extensive hydroelectric capacity.

It is the 132nd largest hydro plant in Brazil. With 130.845 MW, it represents 0.07% of Brazil’s total hydro capacity of 180,234 MW. Brazil has 720 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 180,234 MW. Compared to the country’s largest hydro plant, Itaipu Dam at 14,000 MW, Castro Alves is approximately one-hundredth the size.

Hydropower is a dominant source of electricity in Brazil, accounting for around 60% of the country’s generation mix. The abundant river systems and rainfall patterns in Brazil facilitate the development of hydroelectric plants. Castro Alves is located about 300 km from Porto Alegre in the southern region of the country.
