Yayangshan Dam — 120 MW Hydroelectric

Yayangshan Dam is a 120 MW hydroelectric power plant located in Yunnan Province, China, operated by Yunnan Datang International Lixianjiang River Basin Hydropower Development Co Ltd since its commissioning in 2006. This facility contributes to the renewable energy supply in the region.

Ranking as the 292nd largest hydro plant in China, Yayangshan Dam is part of a network of 1,000 hydro plants that together generate 313,039 MW. With its 120 MW capacity, it accounts for 0.04% of the total hydro capacity in the country. The largest hydro plant, the Three Gorges Dam, has a capacity of 22,500 MW, making Yayangshan Dam considerably smaller.

Hydropower is a significant part of China’s energy strategy, aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy sources. Yunnan Province’s abundant water resources and mountainous terrain are ideal for hydroelectric power generation. The plant is located approximately 150 km from Kunming, the provincial capital.
