Biomass — 119 MW Biomass

Biomass is a 119 MW biomass power plant located in Guatemala, commissioned in 2014. The facility generates electricity from organic materials, contributing to Guatemala’s renewable energy capacity.

It is the 2nd largest biomass plant in Guatemala. With 119 MW, it represents 13.52% of the country’s total biomass capacity of 880 MW. Guatemala has 13 biomass plants with a combined capacity of 880 MW. Compared to the largest biomass plant, Magdalena at 145 MW, this facility is approximately 82% the size.

Biomass energy plays a growing role in Guatemala’s energy mix, accounting for about 24% of the country’s renewable energy generation. The country’s agricultural sector provides ample organic material for biomass production. The plant is located in the department of Escuintla, approximately 60 km southwest of Guatemala City.
