Wygen III — 116 MW Coal

Wygen III is a 116 MW coal-fired power plant located in Wyoming, United States, operated by Black Hills Power Inc. since its commissioning in 2010. The facility primarily generates electricity from coal, with gas as a secondary fuel option.

It ranks as the 235th largest coal plant in the United States. With 116 MW, it represents 0.04% of the country’s total coal capacity of 261,836 MW. The U.S. has 297 coal plants with a combined capacity of 261,836 MW. Compared to the largest coal plant, W A Parish at 4,008 MW, Wygen III is about 2.9% the size.

Coal remains an important energy source in the United States, contributing around 19% to the national electricity generation mix. The Wygen III plant’s operation supports local coal mining industries in Wyoming, which is one of the largest coal-producing states. It is located approximately 10 miles southeast of Gillette in the Powder River Basin region.
