Porto Estrela is a 112 MW hydroelectric power plant located in Brazil, commissioned in 2001. It contributes to Brazil’s renewable energy landscape, utilizing the country’s extensive river systems for electricity generation.

Porto Estrela ranks as the 146th largest hydro plant in Brazil. With its 112 MW capacity, it accounts for 0.06% of Brazil’s total hydro capacity of 180,234 MW. Brazil has 720 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 180,000 MW. The largest hydro facility, Itaipu Dam, has a capacity of 14,000 MW, making Porto Estrela about 0.008 times its size.

Hydropower is the primary source of electricity in Brazil, providing approximately 60% of the nation’s energy needs. The Porto Estrela plant takes advantage of the country’s favorable geography, with numerous rivers and rainfall patterns conducive to hydroelectric generation. It is located in the southeastern region of Brazil, around 300 km from Belo Horizonte.
