ALMASSIRA — 128 MW Hydroelectric

ALMASSIRA stands as Morocco’s 21st largest power generation facility, with a capacity of 128 MW, representing 1.47% of the country’s total installed capacity of 8,698 MW. This hydroelectric plant ranks as the 5th largest among the 18 hydro facilities in Morocco, which predominantly relies on coal for its energy needs. Commissioned in 1980 and operated by the Office National de l’Electricité (ONE), ALMASSIRA harnesses the power of flowing water, utilizing turbine technology to convert kinetic energy into electricity efficiently. The facility is strategically located near the IMFOUT hydro plant, which has a capacity of 32 MW, showcasing the limited yet significant presence of hydroelectric power in this region. The majority of Morocco’s energy generation is coal-based, making ALMASSIRA’s renewable output particularly valuable in diversifying the energy mix and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
