Alvkarleby — 116 MW Hydroelectric

Alvkarleby is a 116 MW hydroelectric power plant located in Sweden, operated entirely by Vattenfall. The plant was commissioned in 1991 and contributes to the country’s renewable energy generation.

It ranks as the 50th largest hydro plant in Sweden. With a capacity of 116 MW, it represents 0.66% of Sweden’s total hydro capacity of 17,541 MW. Sweden has 216 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 17,541 MW. Compared to the largest hydro plant, Karlshamn at 1,020 MW, Alvkarleby is approximately 11.4% the size.

Hydropower is a major component of Sweden’s energy mix, providing a significant share of the country’s electricity. The geographical features of Sweden, with numerous rivers and lakes, facilitate extensive hydroelectric generation. The plant is located approximately 200 km north of Stockholm in the eastern region of Sweden.
