DP CHPP-2 ‘Eskhar’ — 150 MW Coal

DП ТЕЦ-2 “Есхар” holds a notable place in Ukraine’s energy landscape, ranking 83rd out of 158 plants in the country, with a capacity of 150 MW. This coal-fired power generation facility, commissioned in 1930, represents a historical commitment to coal as a primary energy source, which remains dominant in Ukraine’s energy profile. The plant’s technology reflects decades of coal combustion experience, serving both as a reliable energy source and a remnant of the industrial age in Ukraine. Situated within a significant coal power cluster, the ДП ТЕЦ-2 “Есхар” is flanked by larger facilities like the Zmiivska power station with a capacity of 2425 MW and the Zmiivska power plant at 2200 MW. This proximity to high-capacity plants enhances the region’s stability and reliability of energy supply, essential for supporting industrial and residential needs. While the ДП ТЕЦ-2 contributes a modest 0.12% to the national capacity of 128,524 MW, its role is crucial in maintaining energy security in an era marked by geopolitical tensions and the need for energy independence. Ranking as the 33rd largest coal plant in Ukraine out of 36, it highlights the challenges faced by aging coal facilities amidst a global shift towards cleaner energy solutions.
