Hwacheon — 108 MW Hydroelectric

Hwacheon is a 108 MW hydroelectric power plant located in South Korea, operated by Korea Hydro and Nuclear. The plant has been in operation since 1944, utilizing water flow to generate electricity.

It ranks as the 28th largest hydro plant in South Korea. With a capacity of 108 MW, it represents 0.68% of the country’s total hydro capacity of 15,891 MW. South Korea has 74 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 15,891 MW. Compared to the largest hydro plant, Incheon Tidal Power Station at 1,450 MW, Hwacheon is about one-seventh the size.

Hydropower is a vital part of South Korea’s energy mix, contributing to renewable energy goals. The country’s varied topography, with many rivers and valleys, facilitates hydropower generation. Hwacheon is located approximately 120 km east of Seoul in the Gangwon Province.
