Kalan — 116 MW Hydroelectric

Kalan is a 115.5 MW hydroelectric power plant located in Iran, commissioned in 1998. It is part of the country’s hydroelectric infrastructure, contributing to the overall generation capacity from renewable sources.

This plant ranks as the 35th largest hydro plant in Iran. With a capacity of 115.5 MW, it represents 0.34% of Iran’s total hydro capacity of 33,974 MW. Iran operates 76 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 33,974 MW. Compared to the largest hydro plant, Shahid Abbaspuor at 2,000 MW, Kalan is approximately 5.8% the size.

Hydropower is a vital source of energy in Iran, supplying about 17% of the total electricity. The country’s diverse topography, including rivers and highlands, facilitates the development of hydroelectric facilities. Kalan is located near Tehran, approximately 40 km from the capital city.
