Nkula — 124 MW Hydroelectric

Nkula is a 124 MW hydroelectric power plant located in Malawi. It is one of the key facilities generating electricity from water resources in the country.

Nkula ranks as the 2nd largest hydro plant in Malawi, which has a total of 3 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 344 MW. This facility accounts for approximately 36.09% of Malawi’s total hydro capacity. The largest hydro plant in the country, Kapichira, has a capacity of 128 MW, making Nkula slightly smaller.

Hydropower is essential for Malawi’s energy needs, providing a significant portion of the country’s electricity. The Shire River, which flows through Malawi, is a critical resource for hydropower generation. Nkula is located in the southern region of Malawi, approximately 100 km from the capital city, Lilongwe.
