It was commissioned in 2007 and is the largest coal plant in the country.<\/p>\n<p>This facility ranks as the 1st of 4 coal plants in Mauritius, contributing significantly to the island&#8217;s coal generation capacity of 225 MW. With 105 MW, it accounts for 46.73% of the total coal capacity. The other coal plants in Mauritius are considerably smaller, with the next largest being only a fraction of Savannah Estate&#8217;s capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Coal plays a vital role in Mauritius&#8217;s energy supply, providing nearly half of the country&#8217;s electricity. The reliance on coal is due to limited domestic energy resources and the need for stable generation.
