About this plant
팔당댐 is a 120 MW hydroelectric power plant located in South Korea, operated by 한국수력원자력 since its commissioning in 1974. The facility generates electricity from water, contributing to South Korea’s hydroelectric generation capacity.
It is the 25th largest hydro plant in South Korea. With 120 MW, it represents 0.76% of the country’s total hydro capacity of 15,891 MW. South Korea has 74 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 15,891 MW. Compared to the largest hydro plant, the Incheon Tidal Power Station at 1,450 MW, 팔당댐 is approximately 1/12 the size.
Hydropower is a notable segment of South Korea’s energy mix, accounting for about 6% of total electricity generation. The plant utilizes the natural flow of the Han River, supporting renewable energy initiatives. 팔당댐 is located in Gyeonggi Province, approximately 30 km east of Seoul.
