Yavan — 180 MW Oil

In the heart of Tajikistan, the Yavan power generation facility stands as the sixth largest plant in the country, with a capacity of 180 MW. This facility, commissioned in 1969 and operated by Barki Tojik, plays a modest yet crucial role, contributing 3.40% to Tajikistan’s total capacity of 5,296 MW. While the dominant fuel in the nation is hydroelectric power, Yavan is notable for being the second of only two oil-powered plants, emphasizing the diverse energy landscape of Tajikistan. The facility employs oil-based generation technology, which sets it apart from the numerous hydro plants nearby, including the massive Nurek Hydropower Plant boasting an impressive 3,015 MW capacity, as well as Sangtuda 1 and Baipaza, which have capacities of 700 MW and 600 MW, respectively. Within a 50 km radius, the Yavan facility is surrounded by a cluster of hydro plants, reflecting the country’s reliance on renewable energy sources. Despite this, Yavan’s oil dependency highlights the transitional phase of Tajikistan’s energy production, wherein oil remains a necessary component amidst a surge in hydroelectric capacity. The facility’s strategic position within the energy network is essential for providing backup power and balancing the grid, particularly during seasonal fluctuations in hydroelectric generation. As Tajikistan continues to expand its energy infrastructure, Yavan’s role in the overall energy profile remains significant, especially in supporting peak load demands.
