Dona Francisca — 125 MW Hydroelectric

Dona Francisca is a 125 MW hydroelectric power plant located in Brazil, commissioned in 2001. It generates electricity from water flow, contributing to Brazil’s extensive hydroelectric capacity.

It is the 136th largest hydro plant in Brazil. With 125 MW, it represents 0.07% of Brazil’s total hydro capacity of 180,234 MW. Brazil has 720 hydro plants with a combined capacity of 180,234 MW. Compared to the country’s largest hydro plant, Itaipu Dam at 14,000 MW, this facility is approximately 1/112th the size.

Hydropower is a dominant energy source in Brazil, accounting for around 60% of the country’s electricity generation. The Dona Francisca plant utilizes the natural flow of rivers, supporting Brazil’s renewable energy goals. It is situated in the southern region of the country, approximately 400 km west of Porto Alegre.
