Baghabari GT 1 — 223 MW Natural Gas

Baghabari GT 1 holds a prominent position in Bangladesh’s energy sector as the 16th largest power generation facility out of 57 in the country, boasting a capacity of 223 MW. This gas-fired plant accounts for 1.88% of Bangladesh’s total energy capacity, which stands at 11,840 MW, showcasing its importance in a landscape dominated by gas generation. As the 12th largest gas plant among 27, Baghabari GT 1 plays a crucial role in meeting the energy demands of a rapidly growing economy.

Utilizing advanced gas turbine technology, Baghabari GT 1 efficiently converts natural gas into electricity, providing a reliable and relatively cleaner energy source compared to traditional oil-fired plants. This facility operates alongside several notable nearby plants, including the Siddhirganj (Dutch Bangla), which has a substantial capacity of 520 MW, and other gas plants like Summit Power and Ullapara, which offer 80 MW and 11 MW, respectively. The presence of such a diverse array of facilities within a 50 km radius illustrates the energy cluster that Baghabari is part of, enhancing regional energy security and stability.

The Bangladeshi energy profile is shifting towards gas, which is now the dominant fuel type, overtaking oil and coal. Baghabari GT 1’s contribution is integral to this shift, helping to provide a steady supply of electricity that supports both residential and industrial needs in the region.
